The Gospel According to Lost & The Gospel According to the Simpsons
Lost is NOT just a television show. It has become larger than that - a massive story filled with mystery that has garnered over twenty million participants. Some might call them viewers, but one does not just watch Lost, one participates in it. It is the seemingly infinite ideas, philosophies, and biblical metaphors that make this story so engaging. The tension between Faith and Reason drives every episode and story line. During sessions, middle school youth will watch episodes of Lost and discuss their own reactions to the storyline. In the Gospel According to the Simpsons, this famous TV cartoon show is presented in light of its questioning conventional wisdom and values and also its quirky support of God, faith, and family.
Wednesday Evenings - 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.
Coming of Age (COA)
When we provide the time and opportunities for authentic relationships to develop, then the youth gradually experience powerful transformation - they Come of Age. With the help of their families and their church community, they learn who they are, and they decide what they stand for. This is how each youth creates their own empowering story. During Coming of Age, each youth will develop a faith statement. To create their own faith statements, the “Big Questions” are tackled are week. Such as: What do you believe about God? What happens after we die? How do you live a moral life? Why do bad things happen? Each youth is also paired up with a carefully chosen adult mentor from the congregation. Youth and mentors meet about twice a month and also complete a service project together. The year begins with a potluck and workshop for parents and youth to set the groundwork for their changing relationship. The year concludes with a Celebration Dinner and Coming of Age Service, during which the youth plan and lead Sunday services, as well as present their own faith statements.
