Our Church and Grounds
First Unitarian Church of Des Moines rests on four wooded acres on Des Moines’ south side. Our church’s striking architecture is accented by the natural beauty surrounding it. An expansive auditorium window, some 40 feet wide, brings a vision of changing seasonal beauty to the experience of Sunday services.
The years following the church’s dedication in 1957 brought a significant growth in membership and programming. An expansion and renovation to the building, completed in 2005, added much needed space and functionality. Special attention was paid to the surrounding grounds and gardens as well.
Today, the Memorial Garden on the church’s east side displays a carefully tended array of colorful native plants and lush greenery. Drawing visitors in, a stone and granite walkway leads to a circular center, a lovely site for weddings, memorial services, or simply quiet meditation.
Our beautiful church and grounds offer members, friends and visitors a place to experience personal growth, to be part of a loving community, and to learn, celebrate and serve together.
