Music Notes

May 2012

Many thanks to all of the musicians who participated in the church services during the last half of March and the first half of April: David Brown, Brad Leu, Bruce Martin, Doug Hoffman, Evan Miller, Vocal Ensemble, UU Choir, Bell Ave. Ringers, The Sparks, Chalice Choir, The Flames, and Doug Hoffman. Our church services would not be the same without the willing and talented musicians. Bravo!

A Generous Gift

We received the gift of a 1934 Steinway piano from one of the church’s neighbors, Jeff Jacox. Jeff did not attend this church but was a neighbor who lived on Druid Hill. The Steinway will serve as the church’s rehearsal piano in Channing Hall.

Tribute for Jeff Jacox:

The 1934 Steinway piano that has been donated to the Unitarian Church was a bequest that Jeff Jacox planned as part of his estate. Jeff was born on May 23, 1949, and passed away on September 17, 2011. Jeff grew up in Fort Dodge, Iowa, graduating from high school there in 1967. Upon his graduation from high school, he enrolled in George Washington University in Washington D.C. where he studied electrical engineering. After completing his undergraduate studies, he went on to Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ, where he studied organ performance to prepare for a career in church music ministry. However, after receiving his degree he returned to Fort Dodge where he worked in the family business (Bock Brothers Welding Supply). In 1996, the company was sold and Jeff retired and moved to Des Moines, eventually finding the home he loved on Druid Hill Drive. The Steinway was purchased by Jeff from an estate in New York City, and he had it shipped to Iowa where it was always a centerpiece of his home.
