Rites of Passage
Child Dedication and Naming Ceremonies
Several times each year, members and friends of the church participate in a ceremony of dedication and naming for their children. Led by Rev. Mark Stringer, children’s given names are acknowledged and blessed, and the responsibility to them as parents and as a community is acknowledged. These Child Dedication and Naming ceremonies are typically held during services on the weekend before Thanksgiving, during the Christmas Eve afternoon family service, and during the Flower Communion Service the second Sunday in June. Because only three children may be dedicated at any given service, please let Rev. Mark Stringer know of your intentions as soon as possible, and no later than one week prior to the service.
Marriage and Commitment Ceremonies
Marriage and Commitment ceremonies at First Unitarian are crafted by the couple and minister, in a way that best speaks to the couple's commitment and hopes for the future. To arrange for a ceremony led by Rev. Mark Stringer:
Arrange to set a date, time and location (and rehearsal, if necessary) with Rev. Stringer. If the church is the wedding and/or reception site, the space and fee should be reserved with the Office Assistant.
Meet with Rev. Stringer for a discussion of the service. You will be provided a packet of information and suggestions for ceremony options and readings.
Meet with Rev. Stringer again, a month or so before the ceremony, to finalize arrangements, including rehearsal, if one is to be held.
Weddings may be performed for non-members. These require payment of honorarium and any expenses incurred.
