"These
are the seductive voices of the night: the Sirens.... It would be doing them
an injustice to think that they wanted to seduce; they knew they had claws...
and they lamented this aloud. They could not help it if their laments
sounded so beautiful." Franz Kafka |

ON
PARABLES by Franz Kafka Many
complain that the words of the wise are always merely parables and of no use
in daily life, which is the only life we have. When the sage says:
"Go over," he does not mean that we should cross to some actual
place, which we could do anyhow if the labor were worth it; he means some
fabulous yonder, something unknown to us, something too that he cannot
designate more precisely, and therefore cannot help us here in the very least.
All these parables really set out to say merely that the incomprehensible is
incomprehensible, and we know that already. But the cares we have to
struggle with everyday; that is a different matter. Concerning
this a man once said: Why such reluctance? If you only followed the
parables you yourselves would become parables and with that rid of all your
daily cares. Another
said: I bet that is also a parable. The first
said: You have won. The
second said: But unfortunately only in parable. The first
said: No, in reality; in parable you have lost. |

Great
Books Discussion Group meets in Mary Safford Room Wednesday, July 23, 6:45-8:45 pm This month’s discussion is Flannery
O’Connor’s short story “Good Country People.” Using a shared inquiry method of
discussion, we examine significant works of fiction, philosophy, political
science, poetry, and drama - probing the many questions raised by a text.
Discussions are lively, engaging, friendly, sometimes contentious,
enlightening–and a good deal of fun. Contact Greg Pelley at

First Unitarian Summer RE Programming: “Caring for our planet earth, the home we share with all
living things.” We will be focusing on the 7th Principle, Respect for the
Interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part. Because of this,
most activities will be outside, weather permitting. Please be sure that your
children wear appropriate clothing. If you wish to have your child wear
sunscreen or insect repellant, please be sure to take care of this prior to
coming to church. We will be unable to provide either. |
|
Outdoor project: The west entrance into the
church is perceived by many to be the front door. The area under the two oak
trees is becoming overgrown with saplings & assorted weeds and doesn’t create
a very good impression. The grounds committee is looking for a handful of
gardeners and willing workers to clean up the area,
replant the Hosta and spread woodchips to keep down
the weeds. If possible, we’d like to add a path thru the area so people can
look at the Hosta and a bench so people can wait
for their ride, or just sit there and enjoy the shade. This project will probably take
4-5 weeks depending on the number of volunteers. It’s July and it’s HOT,
so if you are lucky enough to be retired & working in the morning works
better for you, after an initial meeting to share the plan, we have no
problem with people working at their own schedule. After the area is
replanted, we will need 2-3 people that would be willing to maintain (weed
& water) the area thru the first growing season. Please contact Pat Headley (265-3354) or Theresa Miller (720-2614) if you are
interested & can help. Plan on being at the church, Tuesday July 29 at
6:30 pm, unless it’s pouring rain. Please bring your favorite digging/dividing
tool and rakes, etc. |

Welcome Home Wednesdays: starts

group. Beginners and experienced
practitioners are welcome. If you would be willing to volunteer
with any of these programming events for adults or youth, please contact Lori Emison Clair at membership@ucdsm.org or 515-453-2999. |
